Anthony Petrello: Philanthropist And Oil Industry Executive
Anthony Petrello is the director of Texas Children’s Hospital Inc. It’s a volunteer position. Petrello became involved with the organization when his daughter Carena was born prematurely and had periventricular leukomalacia. To help Carena and other children, he had donated $7 million to help fund the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute. Petrello has remained involved in philanthropic activities at the hospital since then.
Many people know Anthony Petrello as president, CEO and board chairman of Nabors Industries Ltd. It’s the world’s largest land based gas and oil drilling company. He’s been with the company since 1991. Prior to working with Nabors Industries, Petrello was an attorney with the internationally known law firm Baker & McKenzie. The firm had hired him when he graduated from Harvard Law School. Anthony Petrello had so impressed the law firm they had promoted him to managing director of their Manhattan office. Nabors Industries was one of Baker & McKenzie’s biggest clients.
In the Newark, New Jersey neighborhood in which Anthony Petrello was raised he was known as a math whiz. His math skills had helped him get a scholarship to Yale where he earned BS and MS degrees in mathematics under the tutelage of famed mathematician Serge Lang. Most people had expected Petrello to pursue a career in mathematics. But his choice to go to law school has led to a brilliant career gas and oil. In 2015, Nabors Industries had made Petrello America’s highest paid CEO when they paid him $68.2 million.
