Sujit Choudhry joins other experts in addressing challenges facing Ukraine’s presidential system
Sujit Choudhry joined a team of constitutional and legal experts earlier this year in Kiev, Ukraine to discuss the semi-presidential system in the country and the challenges facing it. Among the experts who attended the workshop to air their views on the current stalemate in the country is Sujit Choudhry, the Director of Center for Constitution Transition. The workshop was hosted by various organizations that include intergovernmental organizations, International Institute for constitutional reforms, and workshop for Democracy.
Sujit was privileged to discuss Ukrainian constitutional reforms with experts who are extremely versed in legal reforms and whose views were highly required. Some of the attendees hold prominent positions in the Ukrainian government and other reputable organizations in the country. Among them include Vladimir Vasikenko, a representative from the human rights groups in Ukraine, Thomas Sidelius from Dalarna University, Sumit Bisarya from the IDEA, Viktor Musiaka of the Supreme Court, Sergyi of the Ukraine’s Constitutional Commission, amongst others.

When Sujit was given an opportunity to address the workshop, one of the things was easily noticeable is his unmatched expertise in comparative law. In his comments, Sujit was quick to note that Ukrainian presidential system was unstable. Sujit blamed the instability on the concentration of power on the presidency, weak political parties in the country and the legislature electoral system. After pointing out the challenges facing the presidential system in Ukraine, Sujit recommended solutions that the country can adapt to end the instability. Sujit commented on the recent trend where transitional democracies are engaging in the constitutional making process. Sujit Choudhry is the Director of Center for Constitutional Transitions, an organization that is comprised of constitutional and legal experts from various parts of the globe. The organization holds workshops and meeting where the experts share their views on different issues affecting the constitution-making process.
