Sujit Choudhry; An authority in Constitution Making and Democratization Processes
Many countries in the world are struggling with challenges related to the implementation of the constitution and adherence to the rule of law. In some instances, constitutional experts have provided guidance in turning around these countries. One of these experts is Sujit Choudhry, Director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions. He was involved in a workshop on the semi-presidential system of Ukraine. The workshop which was attended by a host of local and international experts also discussed the constitutional challenges facing the country. It had been organized by Ukrainian organizations such as International Institute for Democracy and Electorate Assistance and the Center of Policy and Legal Reform.
Sujit Choudhry opined that the platform offered an opportunity to discuss the issues in the presence of experts. He points out that the democratization process in Ukraine has not been steady. Choudhry attributes this to the dominant presidency, a legislature electoral system, and weak political parties. Additional article on patch.com.
The Center of Constitutional Transitions mainly focuses on mobilizing knowledge support in constitution-making processes. It is made possible by bringing together local and international experts. The result is usually the development of evidence-based policy options. Based on this principle, Sujit Choudhry was joined by a team of experienced and notable people from Ukraine. They included Vladimir Vasilenko Ukraine’s representative on Human Rights and Thomas Sidelius from Dalarna University’s among others.
