From UT-Arlington Graduate to Energy Transfer Chairman Kelcy Warren’s Path
Kelcy Warren graduated from the University of Texas-Arlington in 1978 and went on to found Energy Transfer, a company that grew into one of North America’s largest energy infrastructure businesses. Decades later, he returned the favor to his alma mater in a major way.
The Largest Gift in UTA History
In 2023, Kelcy Warren donated $12 million to UT-Arlington, the single largest donation in the university’s history. The gift was directed toward the school’s resource and energy engineering program. Warren described the moment as an opportunity to give back to an institution that shaped his career and to address a genuine need: Texas requires more graduates capable of managing the technical demands of the energy industry. The donation built on $4 million Warren had previously given across 25 years, including a graduate fellowship for students in Syed Qasim’s honor.
An Ongoing Commitment to Texas Education
Warren’s connection to Texas higher education goes beyond donations. Governor Greg Abbott appointed him to the University of Texas System Board of Regents, a position he has held through 2025. From that seat, Kelcy Warren has direct influence over the policies and priorities of one of the country’s largest public university systems. His trajectory from student to major donor to regent tells the story of an alumnus who never really left the institution behind. See related link for additional information.
