Gulf Coast Western’s Charity Work Sets It Apart in Oil and Gas
Oil and gas companies are not typically known for philanthropic outreach, but Gulf Coast Western has built a reputation for charitable giving that extends well beyond its extraction operations. The Dallas-based firm, led by CEO Matthew Fleeger, has made community involvement a core part of its identity.
Among its most visible charitable partnerships is the one Gulf Coast Western formed with the Sadie Keller Foundation. The foundation was created by Sadie Keller, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of seven. She missed her second and third grades due to chemotherapy treatments, which gave her firsthand understanding of what hospitalized children endure during the holiday season. The foundation collects toys from organizations and well-wishers and distributes them to children fighting cancer over the Christmas holidays.
A $25,000 Donation That Made a Difference
Fleeger’s personal friendship with Keller inspired Gulf Coast Western to take direct action. He donated $25,000 so the foundation could purchase toys for children battling cancer. Company employees then made trips to stores to purchase the items themselves. When Keller visited the Gulf Coast Western offices to collect the donations, she was reportedly astounded by the volume of gifts the company had provided.
The impact was measurable. The contribution helped the Sadie Keller Foundation grow from serving children in a single hospital to reaching cancer-stricken kids in 11 hospitals across the United States. The foundation also advocates for greater research funding for pediatric cancer and works to raise awareness about how the disease affects children’s daily lives.
Giving as Part of Company Culture
Gulf Coast Western donates to various charities and organizations each year, but the relationship with the Sadie Keller Foundation holds particular significance within the company. The partnership reflects an organizational culture that prioritizes human connection alongside business performance. For Gulf Coast Western, community engagement is not a marketing tactic. It is an extension of the same values, including integrity and long-term relationship-building, that define how the company operates with its investors and business partners.
